The UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has awarded GBP9.3 million (US$11.7 million) innovation funding to Vattenfall for the development of 8 MW offshore hydrogen electrolyzer project in the UK. The funding is coming from the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio Low Carbon Hydrogen Supply 2 fund.
The asset is located at the 97 MW European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) in Aberdeen Bay, also developed by Vattenfall. The Hydrogen Turbine 1 (HT1) pilot project will develop the hydrogen-producing offshore wind turbine with the electrolyzer installed directly on an existing operational turbine. The project will produce enough hydrogen per day to power a hydrogen bus traveling 15,000 miles, which will be piped to shore at the Port of Aberdeen.
The construction work has already started on the project. The first production is expected in 2025.
