Vattenfall has started building the Hommerdingen-Biesdorf hybrid wind-solar power plant together with local grid operator Westnetz in south-west Germany.
The hybrid power plant Hommerdingen-Biesdorf consists of four wind turbines manufactured by Enercon with a total rated output of 17 megawatts (MW), and more than 12,000 solar modules with a rated output of 7.6 MWp. It is being built across the municipal areas of Hommerdingen (wind park) and Biesdorf (solar), both part of the Südeifel municipality near the Luxembourg border. According to current planning, the commissioning of the plant is scheduled for autumn 2026.
With the Hommerdingen-Biesdorf project, Vattenfall plans to connect the solar facility to the distribution grid through the existing wind park infrastructure operated by Westnetz instead of building a separate grid connection for the solar park. In this arrangement, the solar installation is technically considered an additional wind turbine, allowing the entire project to operate with a single grid connection—an approach that has been approved by Westnetz.
