State-run THDC India Ltd (THDCIL) has signed a power purchase agreement with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL) to supply 184.08 MW from India’s first variable-speed pumped storage project (PSP) at Tehri, Uttarakhand.
This cutting-edge facility will help Gujarat meet its peak-hour electricity demand and facilitate the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources by dynamically storing and supplying electricity. THDCIL’s Chairman & Managing Director, R.K. Vishnoi, emphasised that the project reinforces the company's commitment to promoting energy transition through advanced hydropower solutions. He described the variable-speed pumped-storage plant as a reliable, flexible, and green source of energy for addressing Gujarat's dynamic load requirements. This initiative complements India's broader strategy of harnessing pumped-storage technology to enhance grid resilience and renewable energy integration amid rising demand and variable supply.
