French renewables developer Akuo has won a tender to build a large-scale battery storage system with a planned storage capacity of 200 MWh in New Caledonia, France.

Akuo intends to implement a 200 MWh battery storage project in New Caledonia, providing a continuous supply of 50 MW for three hours daily for a duration of 12 years. The primary purpose of this facility is to support the operations of nickel mines. The management of the facility will be under the direct oversight of Enercal, the energy provider in New Caledonia. New Caledonia is actively promoting the further development of renewable energy sources and storage solutions for integration into its power grid.

This installation will be situated in the town of Boulouparis on the western coast of Grande Terre. It will store electricity generated by solar photovoltaic (PV) systems during daylight hours and release it during the nighttime. The plant will rely on lithium-ion batteries and is scheduled to be commissioned by the conclusion of 2024.
