Sunrise Wind offshore wind project, has received approval for its construction and operations plan (COP) from the US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).
Sunrise Wind's 924 MW of renewable energy capacity will be sufficient to power about 600,000 homes in New York. The COP approval specifies the wind turbine spacing of one nautical mile for the project, the construction approach that must be followed for any work done in federal ocean waters, and mitigation measures to safeguard marine animals and habitats. Regarding the project's 25-year offshore wind renewable energy certificate (OREC) contract, Sunrise Wind and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recently concluded their agreements. At the project site, which is about 48 km east of Montauk, New York, offshore construction will pick up later in 2024. In the meantime, the Sunrise Wind team will expedite work on the onshore transmission line. In 2026, the project is anticipated to be operational.
