The University of Maryland (UMD) has partnered with Maryland Energy Impact Partners (MEIP), which includes Plenary Americas, Kiewit Development Company, Kiewit Power Constructors Co., and Honeywell on the NextGen Energy Program – the university’s project to renew and modernize its energy system.

The MEIP team consists of leaders in innovative project design, financing, construction, asset management, and operations. Key members include Plenary Americas (Sponsor), Kiewit Development (Sponsor), Kiewit Power Constructors (Lead Contractor), and Honeywell (Lead Operator). As part of the capital improvements, MEIP will develop a Decarbonization Strategy Development Plan to help the university achieve its goal of becoming fossil fuel-free by 2035. The NextGen Energy Program, a US$390 million investment in campus infrastructure, aims to significantly enhance energy services on campus, immediately reduce carbon emissions by 23%, and cut water consumption by 50% annually. The program is eligible for an estimated US$69 million to US$79 million in funding from the Biden administration under the Inflation Reduction Act. Construction is expected to begin in July 2024.
