Colbun SA and Sumitomo Corp have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly conduct a feasibility study of green hydrogen-to-ammonia projects in Chile, with a particular focus on the Antofagasta and Magallanes regions.

In Antofagasta, the partners will evaluate the viability of utilizing Colbun's Inti Pacha and other solar photovoltaic (PV) projects as a renewable energy source for the electrolysis process. Concerning the exportation of hydrogen in the form of ammonia, the two look into Mejillones logistics and port infrastructure. They will focus on Interacid, Sumitomo's company that imports sulphuric acid and mining fuels.

Colbun and Sumitomo plan to build an ammonia project with the ability to produce 1 million tonnes per year in the Magallanes region.
