Steel Dynamics, Inc. has signed a Renewable Product Purchase Agreement (RPPA) with NextEra Energy Resources, LLC. Under this agreement, Steel Dynamics will purchase 308 MW of renewable energy from a wind project in Scurry County, Texas, USA.
Upon completion, the wind farm is expected to generate approximately 1.1 million MWh of electricity annually. This accounts for a remarkable 16% of Steel Dynamics' steel mills' electricity usage in 2022, surpassing the company's target of 10% renewable electricity by 2025 and furthering their aspiration to reach 30% by 2030. In addition to substantially reducing the company's reliance on fossil fuels, the project will contribute significantly to its long-term efforts to mitigate Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.
The wind energy center will be developed, owned, and operated by a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources and is projected to commence operations by the end of 2024. Its annual energy output is estimated to be equivalent to the electricity consumed by over 100,000 average U.S. homes.
