SSE Renewables has completed and brought into full operation its Ferrybridge Battery Energy Storage System, developed in partnership with OCU Energy and Sungrow, at Ferrybridge in West Yorkshire, UK.
The 150 MW / 300 MWh project takes advantage of its location at the former 2 GW Ferrybridge power station site, which was shut down in 2016. The newly operational battery storage facility is built to store electricity and supply it back to the grid during periods of peak demand. It can run at full capacity for up to two hours and has the capability to meet the peak electricity needs of nearly 250,000 homes.
Construction at Ferrybridge started in August 2023 and included the installation of 136 battery units provided by Sungrow, along with a 132 kV transformer on site. The work was carried out under the leadership of the project’s main contractor, OCU Energy. Ferrybridge is SSE’s second operational battery storage facility, following the launch of the 50 MW / 100 MWh Salisbury BESS in April 2024. With its completion, SSE’s total operational battery capacity has reached 200 MW / 400 MWh, while an additional 470 MW / 940 MWh is currently being developed, including the 320 MW / 640 MWh Monk Fryston project in North Yorkshire and the 150 MW / 300 MWh Fiddler’s Ferry project in Cheshire.
SSE’s 31MW Littleton Solar Farm near Evesham, Worcestershire has now entered full operation following a two-year construction delivery programme.
