Solarcentury Africa has commenced full commercial operations of the 34.5 MWp second phase of the Mailo Solar Power Plant, in partnership with BB Energy, Standard Bank South Africa and Alensy Energy Solutions, in Zambia.
The project forms part of the phased development of the planned 118 MWp Mailo Solar PV facility. The milestone was achieved following the successful completion of construction works and grid compliance testing. With commercial operations now fully underway, the second phase (Mailo 2) contributes an additional 34.5 MWp of solar generation capacity, increasing the plant's total operational capacity to 59.5 MWp.
The project was financed through an equity investment from Solarcentury Africa's parent company, BB Energy, alongside debt financing from Standard Bank South Africa. Alensy Energy Solutions was appointed as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor and successfully completed the construction of the facility in less than 12 months.
The second phase builds upon the successful operation of the first phase of the Mailo Solar PV project, which has been generating electricity since July 2025 and selling power on a merchant basis through the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). This further highlights the commercial feasibility of merchant-based solar power generation in Zambia.
Mailo 2 is expected to strengthen Zambia's electricity sector by adding renewable energy generation capacity, enhancing energy security, promoting economic development and supporting the country's transition towards cleaner energy sources. The project is part of Solarcentury Africa's broader portfolio of approximately 350 MW of solar projects across Zambia, spanning operational, under-construction and development stages.
