SBM Offshore, a Dutch offshore oil and gas services business, has announced plans for a 400 MW floating offshore wind project in the Irish Sea's North Channel, midway between Northern Ireland and Scotland.
SBM Offshore has created a steel tension leg platform, which is a patented floating construction for wind turbines. The business is considering two locations between 12 and 27 kilometers from the beaches of Antrim and Down counties. The floating wind projects will have the capacity to generate 13% of Northern Ireland’s energy needs.
