SSE Renewables and Bord na Móna have invited community members to a series of public consultation events for the proposed 800 MW Derryfadda Wind Farm to be located on Bord na Móna’s landbank in the Derryfadda, Boughill, and Gowla Bogs situated in Galway, along the border with Roscommon, Ireland.
As Derryfadda Wind Farm is at an early phase of development, the proposed number, location, and height of the turbines are still to be determined. SSE Renewables and Bord na Móna will develop a draft layout for the wind farm in the coming months. Bord na Móna and SSE Renewables announced their joint venture earlier in 2024. If fully delivered, it is expected the portfolio of wind farms would generate 800 MW, enough renewable electricity to meet the energy demand of around half a million homes, while displacing half a million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
The purpose of the project is to generate renewable electricity which will be transmitted directly onto Ireland’s National Grid which EirGrid manages.
