Uniper has chosen Plug Power Inc. to develop the electrolyzer technology for the Maasvlakte site at the Port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. By 2026, Uniper aims to commission 100 MW of Plug electrolysis capacity at the H2Maasvlakte project to produce green hydrogen. This capacity will increase to 500 MW by 2030 at the latest, in an effort to drastically reduce carbon emissions in the Rotterdam Harbor area, which is the largest carbon-emitting industrial cluster in the country.
Under the agreement, Plug will provide 10 prefabricated PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolyzer arrays for the hydrogen facility. Uniper has chosen Plug's mature stack electrolyzer technology to support this project.
Uniper's goal is to achieve a carbon-neutral portfolio by 2035, and the H2Maasvlakte project will play a significant role in achieving this goal. Plug designs the electrolysis technology for this project as part of the H2Maasvlakte Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study, which is currently being conducted by Uniper and Technip Energies.
