Compañía Eléctrica El Platanal (Celepsa) has been granted a temporary concession for the 100 MW Montalvo solar project in Moquegua, a southern region of Peru. The renewable energy developer filed the concession request with the Ministry of Energy and Mines in January 2023. Following the approval, Celepsa now has a period of 24 months to execute feasibility studies for the planned photovoltaic park in the Moquegua district of the Mariscal Nieto province.
The Montalvo solar project is a major step forward for Peru's renewable energy ambitions. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the country generated more than 50% of its electricity from hydropower and 38% from fossil fuels in 2022. Solar, however, only accounted for 1.7% of electricity production. Expansions in renewable energy plants like the Montalvo solar project represent a crucial move towards reducing the country's carbon footprint and making meaningful strides towards tackling climate change.
Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines has made strides toward encouraging more renewable energy projects, as part of its goal to reach 100% renewable energy usage. This achievement requires increasing the nation's current capacity to 28 GW from renewable sources, doubling wind and tripling solar capacity. The approval of the Montalvo solar project concession serves as additional viability proof of its implementation of renewable energy projects.
