Pattern Energy signed a 600 MW power purchase agreement with Salt River Project (SRP) to supply wind energy from its SunZia project to Arizona's power grid.
Under the agreement, SRP will begin receiving 400 MW of wind power in fall 2026, with the supply increasing to 600 MW by the summer of 2027. The SunZia project is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power around one million U.S. homes annually and represents a US$11 billion investment in clean energy infrastructure across the Southwestern United States. The project comprises 3,650 MW of wind generation capacity and a 550-mile high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line designed to efficiently transmit large volumes of electricity over long distances. The addition of SunZia's wind power will further diversify SRP's energy portfolio, complementing its existing mix of hydroelectric, wind, natural gas, solar, battery storage, and other power generation resources.
SRP currently has 288 MW of wind energy serving its customers. The energy from SunZia supports SRP’s plan to more than double the capacity of its power system by 2035 through the addition of thousands of megawatts of renewable energy, as well as natural gas and battery energy storage resources.
