Denmark’s Ørsted A/S and utility Eversource Energy have taken the final investment decision (FID) on the 130 MW South Fork offshore wind project in New York, USA.
Once completed at the end of 2023, the offshore wind farm will generate enough clean, renewable energy to power 70,000 homes. Earlier in 2022, South Fork Wind received final approval from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for its construction and operations plan, the final in the agency’s review of the project.
The project will be located about 35 miles east of Montauk Point and its 12 Siemens-Gamesa 11 MW turbines will generate energy that will be delivered to the electric grid in the Town of East Hampton. Over a 25-year period, South Fork Wind is expected to eliminate up to six million tons of carbon emissions, or the equivalent of taking 60,000 cars off the road annually.
