AES Hawaii has started operations on the 60 MW Kūihelani solar and 240 MWh battery energy storage system located on 450 acres in downtown Maui between Kūihelani Highway and Maui Veterans Highway, Hawaii, USA.
Hawaii has the highest average electricity price in the U.S. at $0.43.93 per kWh. The Kūihelani Solar-plus-Storage facility, developed by AES Hawaii, aims to lower these costs for many residents by generating electricity at just $0.08 per kWh, meeting 15% of Maui’s demand. This facility will offset the need to import approximately 2 million barrels of oil. Hawaiian Electric will purchase the electricity under a 25-year power purchase agreement with AES Hawaii.
