Ontario, a province of Canada, plans a tender for 1.5 GW of energy storage capacity to address the increasing demand for energy, assure the reliability of the power network, and provide a reliable, affordable, and clean electricity supply.
The competitive bidding process will be administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The procurement effort is part of a bigger plan to add 4 GW of new electricity generation and energy storage capacity, with up to 1.5 GW coming from natural gas generation and the remainder from other technologies.
Ontario has produced excess electricity for over a decade, and it is anticipated that supply will meet demand without the need for new capacity until at least 2025. The need for new electrical resources is expected to increase after 2025 and 2026.
