Neoen has announced the development of the 100 MW / 400 MWh Ako Battery project in partnership with Equans and Toho in Ako, Japan.
The Ako Battery is situated in Hyogo Prefecture in Japan’s Kansai region. Neoen is developing the project in collaboration with Equans and Toho and secured a grid connection agreement with Kansai Electric Power Company in January 2026. Designed as a four-hour duration battery, the facility will play an important role in supporting Japan’s power grid by improving its stability and resilience. The project is expected to receive notice to proceed in the coming months, with commercial operations planned for 2028.
Neoen operates in 15 countries across three major regions—Europe, the Americas, and the Australia-Pacific region, which includes Australia, Japan, and New Zealand. Since commissioning the Hornsdale Power Reserve in 2017, widely regarded as the world’s first large-scale battery, the company has established itself as a key player in Australia’s energy storage market, where it holds the largest portfolio of utility-scale batteries, totaling 2.3 GW / 7.2 GWh either operational or under construction. Globally, Neoen’s battery storage footprint extends across seven countries—Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and El Salvador—with a combined capacity of 2.8 GW / 8.1 GWh currently in operation or being developed.
