Tuas Power has signed an MoU to offtake over 300 MW of renewable energy from a solar farm in Indonesia to Singapore by 2027.
Marubeni Global Indonesia (MGI) is set to initiate the construction of solar power plants valued at US$9 billion on an island near Batam in 2024. The aim is to supply Singapore with low-carbon electricity starting from 2027, as outlined in a recently signed agreement. Under this commitment, MGI will provide 600 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Tuas Power, Singapore's leading power generation company.
The project's initial phase, commencing in March 2024 on Galang Island, south of Batam in the Riau Islands province, will result in electricity being integrated into the grid by the end of 2027. The first solar farm will boast a capacity of 2.55 gigawatt-peak (GWp) alongside a 7GWp battery-energy storage system. Following the operational launch of the initial solar farm in 2027, the project's second phase will unfold on nine less-populated or uninhabited islands near Batam. Initially, the company plans to export up to 400 MW during the first phase, with this capacity expanding as the project advances toward the targeted 600 MW upon the completion of the second phase.
