Mpatamanga Hydro Power Limited (MHPL) has launched an international procurement process to select contractors for the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Testing and Commissioning (EPC) contract for the 365.6 MW Mpatamanga Hydropower Storage Project in Malawi. Located on the Shire River in the country’s southern region, spanning the Blantyre and Neno districts, the project comprises two cascading hydropower plants with installed capacities of 306 MW and 59.6 MW, respectively, along with dedicated substations and two transmission lines.
Under the procurement process announced on 15 September 2026, MHPL intends to select between one and three eligible contractors to enter into Pre-Construction Services Agreements (PCSAs) ahead of the main EPC contract. The initial selection will assess applicants’ financial capacity, technical capabilities and other qualification criteria, including the target price. The World Bank Group’s International Development Association (IDA), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the project developers support the project with financing.
The Mpatamanga project is intended to strengthen Malawi’s electricity supply by generating renewable power and providing storage to help meet peak demand. Interested applicants can access the initial selection documentation through MHPL’s virtual data room after requesting access and accepting a non-disclosure agreement. Applications must be submitted electronically by 13 November 2026, according to the official procurement notice.
