The World Bank Board of Executive Directors has approved a US$ 350 million grant from the International Development Association (IDA) to support Malawi’s Mpatamanga Hydropower Storage Project (MHSP).

The MHSP will have a total generation capacity of 358.5 MW, comprising a 301 MW peaking plant at the main dam and a 57.5 MW baseload plant downstream at the regulating dam. The project is situated along the Shire River, between two existing hydropower facilities. Implemented as a public-private partnership, the project is led by a consortium including Electricité de France (EDF) and SN Malawi BV, backed by British International Investment, Norfund, and TotalEnergies.

Upon completion, the MHSP is expected to provide electricity to over 1 million new households, significantly improving energy access across Malawi. The construction and operation phases are projected to create thousands of jobs, contributing to economic growth and development. With a total cost exceeding US$1.5 billion, the MHSP represents the largest foreign direct investment in Malawi's history, marking a significant milestone in the country's infrastructure development.
