Nyika Hydropower Group Limited (NHG) has signed 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) for its 51-MW North Rumphi hydropower cascade project in Malawi with the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM).

Located along the North Rumphi River in northern Malawi, the project consists of three run-of-river schemes—Phoka of 13 MW, Munonono of 18 MW, and Chiweta of 20 MW. It is expected to boost Malawi’s current generation capacity by 9.2% and improve supply to the northern and central regions.

NHG is a Malawian run-of-river hydropower developer, a joint venture between GWA Power Company Limited (GWAP), Bazaruto Renewables, and Jack Ituru Muthomi Renewable Energy Limited (JIM). The North Rumphi Cascade is expected to produce about 276,000 MWh annually, powering 2.7 million people and advancing the government’s 32.4% electrification target by 2030. Financial close is expected in 2027, with full commercial operations seen by 2029. The project is currently at an advanced stage, having secured a significant part of the permits and approvals.
