Iberdrola has started the operation of a 50 MW/25 MWh commercial-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Meath County, Ireland.
The EUR28 million (US$29.2 million) Gorman project features more than 4,000 modules in 16 containers, spanning an area equal to the size of a football pitch. The facility will complement the DS3 initiative, which Irish transmission grid operators EirGrid and SONI developed to fortify the grid as renewable output increases.
The Gorman facility will eventually be expanded by Iberdrola, doubling its capacity to 100 MW.
