Hy2gen has announced its plans to build the first green ammonia plant in Mexico. The Marengo plant, located in the southern state of Campeche near the Guatemala border, will have a 200 MW electrolyzer capacity and an annual production volume of 180,000 tonnes. The facility will be powered by 208 MW of solar PV and 415 MW of onshore wind, making it an off-grid plant.
The project, expected to start operations in 2027, will be an important milestone for the Mexican government's efforts to transition to renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. The green ammonia produced at the Marengo plant will be exported to Germany for use in the fertilizer industry.
Hy2gen has also signed a cooperation agreement with local representatives to conduct further feasibility studies of the project.
