Hill International was selected by JSC Almaty Power Plants to deliver project management services for the modernization of the 510 MW Almaty Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant. Hill finished the tender preparation phase, and the process is currently underway.
Almaty CHP Plant 2, a 510 MW coal-fired power plant in Kazakhstan's largest metropolis with 2 million residents, was commissioned in 1980. CHP-2 is the main local urban energy source, serving about 64% of the population. The project will convert CHP Plant 2 from coal to natural gas to reduce CO2 emissions and improve municipal air quality.
The initiative is part of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development's (EBRD) Green Cities Program in Almaty. The project aims to cut municipal CO2 emissions by 3 million tons (56%) and eliminate particulate matter and NOx air pollution. The first phase of the coal plant will modernize a 200 MWe unit. The construction is scheduled to be completed in three phases. The entire CHP Plant 2 is anticipated to be completed in 2026.
