HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has signed a contract with Taean Wind Power to design, procure, fabricate, install and commission a 500 MW offshore substation for the Taean offshore wind project off the coast of Taean County, South Chungcheong Province, South Korea.
Taean Wind Power is a joint venture formed by Singapore-based renewable energy company Vena Energy, Denmark’s Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), and Korea Western Power. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) of the offshore substation. The company first entered into a preliminary design agreement in March, followed by a preferred supplier agreement in July, before signing the final contract after completing detailed negotiations.
The offshore substation will enable electricity produced by the planned 500MW Taean offshore wind farm, located in waters off Gaeuido-ri in Taean County, to be transmitted to the onshore grid.
In 2025, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries obtained basic design verification from Norwegian classification society DNV for its independently developed 500MW-class offshore substation model. The company subsequently completed detailed design verification in August 2026, marking the first domestic offshore substation project to receive recognition under international regulations and standards. Building on the experience gained from the Taean project, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to pursue collaboration on additional offshore wind projects in South Korea being developed by Vena Energy, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Korea Western Power.
