Genex Power has announced the appointment of specialist power and water consulting firm, Entura, as Owner’s Engineer for the Kidston Stage 2 projects, comprised of the 250 MW Pumped Storage Hydro project (K2H) and the adjacent multi-staged 270 MW Solar project (K2S).
As Owner's Engineer, Entura will undertake detailed design and engineering verification as well as providing construction and commissioning advice during the implementation phase of the projects, working closely with the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors across both K2S and K2H.
The K2H is located in Northern Queensland. It will consist of an upper and lower reservoir, in addition to an adjacent balancing storage pit. The upper storage reservoir will be created using a 'turkey's nest' type dam, constructed on the waste rock dump to the north of Eldridge Pit. The lower storage reservoir for the project will be the existing Eldridge Pit. Entura is already familiar with the project, having managed the K2H Technical Feasibility Study in 2016.
The project has been designed to support 2000 MWh of continuous power generation in a single generation cycle. It will be co-located alongside K2S, an expansion of the 50 MW Kidston Stage 1 facility, whose output is estimated at about 783 GWh per year, enough to supply over 143,000 local homes and save 648,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.
