Genex starts construction of 250 MW Hydro storage project in Australia

Genex has started main construction works for its 250 MW/2,000 MWh Kidston pumped hydro energy storage project with a tunnel digging at the Queensland site, Australia.

The project is developed by repurposing two disused gold mine pits. By transferring water between the two pits, the site can be used as an energy storage facility. Genex has undertaken works to establish an underground main access tunnel at the Kidston site to provide access to a "powerhouse" cavern located 250 meters below ground level. The powerhouse will host two 125MW Andritz hydro reversible pump turbines, which will generate electricity and pump water for energy storage purposes.

The main access tunnel is expected to be completed in early 2022, with tunneling operations to continue following the first major blast and excavation works needed to establish the tunnel. The Kidston hydro storage project is planned to be finalized and ready for operation in Q4 2024.
