Fuji Electric Co., Ltd has announced that it has been awarded a contract for a complete geothermal power facility for the Olkaria I Geothermal Power Station, located in Kenya, from Marubeni Corporation, the main EPC contractor of the project, which is owned by Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).
Olkaria I is located about 120 kilometers northwest of Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi. It began operations in 1981 and was the nation’s first geothermal power station. It currently runs five turbines with a combined output of approx. 185 MW, making it one of the largest geothermal power stations in Africa.
Fuji Electric's contract calls for construction of a new 6th power generation unit. Construction funds for the project will be provided in the form of an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and financing through the European Development Bank.
The sixth unit scheduled to come online in 2021 will generate 70 MW.
