RWE announced that the first turbine has been successfully installed at its 1.4 GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm located 195 km off the UK’s North East coast on Dogger Bank in the North Sea.
The turbine installation vessel, Wind Peak, from Cadeler, arrived at the offshore site for the first time during the weekend of 22 March, where it started and has now completed the installation of the first turbine. During each vessel cycle, the Wind Peak will carry and install six sets of the latest SG 14-222 wind turbines, supplied by Siemens Gamesa.
The wind farm site covers an area of almost 593 sq km and features 100 SG 14-222 DD offshore turbines each having a 14 MW capacity. One turbine stands over 252 m above sea level, with blades of 108 m sweeping an area of 39,000 sq m, which is equivalent to about 5.5 standard UK football pitches. The annual power generation is estimated to be enough for nearly 1.2 million homes. The project is on course to be fully operational in the second half of 2026.
