Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) invited developers and developer consortiums to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the development of an independent greenfield 400-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) power project in UAE.
EWEC plans to utilize BESS for enhanced system flexibility and ancillary services like frequency response and voltage regulation. This move is part of EWEC's strategy to broaden its energy project portfolio with a sustainability focus, alongside scaling up its solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity to 7.5 GW by 2030. Through these strategic renewable energy initiatives, EWEC aims to decrease carbon dioxide intensity in power generation by approximately 42%, from 330 kg/MWh in 2019 to an estimated 190 kg/MWh by 2030.
The project entails developing, financing, construction, operation, maintenance, and ownership of the BESS system and associated infrastructure. The deadline to submit the EOI is March 22, 2024. After reviewing the EOIs, EWEC will issue a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to interested parties for the next stage, providing further project details, pre-qualification criteria, and the bidding process.
