Masdar has inaugurated a 2 GW Al Dhafra single-site solar PV project in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Al Dhafra Solar PV, spanning over 20 sq km in the desert and situated 35 km from Abu Dhabi city, represents a significant renewable energy project. Constructed in a single phase, this solar plant can generate electricity sufficient to power nearly 200,000 homes, effectively displacing 2.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The installation incorporates an extensive array of almost 4 million solar panels, utilizing innovative bi-facial technology that captures sunlight on both sides of the panels to optimize yield.
Developed in collaboration with key partners such as Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), EDF Renewables, JinkoPower, and procurer Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the project boasts diversified ownership. TAQA holds a 40% stake, Masdar owns 20%, and the remaining partners, EDF Renewables and Jinko Power, each have a 20% share. Operating under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), the plant will supply electricity to EWEC, contributing to raising Abu Dhabi's solar power production capacity to 3.2 GW.
Masdar is selected as the preferred bidder to build and operate the 1,800 MW 6th phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai.
