French utility Electricite de France (EDF) has suspended the development works for the planned 671 MW Shweli 3 hydroelectric power plant in the State of Shan following the human rights issue over the military coup in Myanmar.
In 2018, EDF has secured the development approval of the project from the National League for Democracy government. EDF partners with Japan’s Marubeni Corporation and local company Myanmar Ayeyar Hinthar for the construction and operation of the project.
The US$1.5 billion project aims to generate up to 3 billion kilowatt-hours of energy per year for the national grid.
