Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has acquired the Envo Biogas project in Tønder, Denmark from Anaergia. The purchase is the first investment of CI ABF I, which aims to develop and construct projects that produce green gas and green fuels from organic waste in Europe and North America.
The Envo Biogas plant is expected to be one of the largest biogas plants in Europe, capable of converting 900,000 tons of green sustainable feedstock into approximately 40 million Nm3 of renewable natural gas, which will be injected into the existing natural gas grid. The biogenic CO2 produced by the plant will be used for European Energy's power-to-X facility at the nearby Kassø facility, which will contribute to the production of green fuel for shipping.
Anaergia acquired the project in 2021, and the plant achieved its first gas on 15 November 2022. The Envo Biogas project's full capacity is expected to be commissioned by 2025. The project will contribute to the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors and the security of gas supply by producing green gas and green fuels from organic waste. After producing the green energy, the remaining organic material will be used as nutrients (fertilizer) for agriculture production in the region. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
