EWE has officially begun construction on a 320-megawatt hydrogen generation plant in Emden, marking a major advancement in its Clean Hydrogen Coastline programme. With the civil engineering and construction contract now granted to a general contractor — a consortium made up of Ludwig Freytag, Gebrüder Neumann and MBN — the project moves into full-scale execution, marking the start of tangible work on one of Europe’s largest hydrogen initiatives to date. The plant will be one of the first electrolysers on a market-relevant scale in Germany. From the end of 2027, the first green hydrogen is to be produced in Emden and delivered to industrial customers.
Regarding the Clean Hydrogen Coastline initiative: the programme is divided into several key components, including a 320-MW hydrogen production facility in Emden, East Frisia. In Subproject 2, “Clean Hydrogen Coastline – Huntorf Storage Facility,” EWE will link the new hydrogen network to its existing cavern storage site in Huntorf. Subproject 3, titled “Clean Hydrogen Coastline – H2 Pipeline Infrastructure Northwest,” focuses on upgrading and adapting the regional gas infrastructure in northwest Germany to efficiently transport hydrogen.
