BrightNight has announced plans to construct the 800 MW BrightNight Starfire Renewable Energy Center on the grounds of the Starfire Mine site in Kentucky. The Starfire Mine, once among the largest coal mines in the US, will be transformed into one of the largest solar power plants in the country.
Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Rivian Automotive and environmental organization The Nature Conservancy have partnered with BrightNight as off-takers for the project. Rivian Automotive has committed to purchasing 100 MW of renewable energy during the first phase, while The Nature Conservancy plans to acquire up to 2.5 MW capacity. These collaborations highlight the growing interest and commitment towards green energy solutions.
The BrightNight Starfire Renewable Energy Project will be implemented in four phases, with the first phase scheduled to begin construction in 2025 and bring 210 MW of energy online. Upon completion of all four phases, the solar energy center will reach a capacity of 800 MW.
