The Wakefield Planning Committee has approved BOOM Power’s Woolley Solar Farm, located on 55.3 hectares to the south-west of Woolley village, Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
The proposed 29.7 MW photovoltaic park, spread across approximately 55.3 hectares, will generate clean electricity sufficient to power around 11,700 homes annually and offset around 7,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. Despite being situated within a Green Belt region, the site was designated as ‘grey belt’ land—avoiding the need for “very special circumstances” justification—because the environmental and renewable energy benefits outweighed any potential harm. The project design includes robust ecological enhancements such as hedgerow planting, wildflower meadows, wildlife habitats, and provisions to maintain public access throughout construction. It is also reversible at the end of its 40‑year operational lifespan, ensuring long-term land flexibility.
