Bid invited for 132 kV backbone transmission project in Unguja Island

Zanzibar Electricity Corporation has retendered its invitation to bid for the plant design, supply, and installation on a turnkey basis of 132 kV backbone transmission system infrastructure in Unguja Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania.

The project is divided into two lots. The brief scope of work for Lot – 1: 132 kV Transmission Lines includes:

  • Design, supply, installation, commissioning, and handover of a multi-circuit tower with box cross-arm for incoming and outgoing circuits.
  • Dismantling and replacement of an existing 10 km 33 kV OHTL with twin peak OPGW multi-circuit polygonal monopoles.
  • Stringing of two 33kV circuits of the Welezo – Ubago line with existing nearby 33 kV networks.
  • Design, supply, installation, commissioning, and handover of new 132 kV double circuit transmission lines with the stringing of one circuit each from Ubago breaking point to Makunduchi 132/33 kV substation and Matemwe 132/33 kV substation.
  • Stringing of the second circuit of 132 kV double circuit transmission line from Matemwe 132/33 kV substation to Makunduchi 132/33 kV substation.

The brief scope of work for Lot – 2: 132/33 kV Substations includes:

  • Design, supply, installation, commissioning, and handover of the proposed 2x60 MVA, 132/33 kV Makunduchi substation.
  • The project scope for the EPC contractor includes:
    • AIS outdoor type 132 kV switchgear
    • Double busbars, one breaker configuration with a rated current of minimum 2000A, 31.5kA short circuit current for 1s
    • One 132 kV outdoor bus coupler bay consisting of rated current 2000A
    • Two 132 kV outdoor power transformer bays
    • Two overhead transmission line bays
    • Steel structures, steel gantries, and miscellaneous
    • Protection and Control System
    • Substation metering equipment
    • Communication and SCADA systems
    • 33kV GIS switchgear
    • 33kV capacitor banks
    • Auxiliary systems
    • Civil work
    • Grounding system and lightning protection
  • Construction of the proposed 2x60MVA, 132/33kV Matemwe substation.

Tanzania has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the Zanzibar Energy Sector Transformation and Access Project. Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO), the implementing agency, intends to apply part of the proceeds toward payments under the Contracts for the 132 kV Backbone Transmission System Infrastructure.
