The Government of New South Wales has granted AGL Energy the planning approval for the 500 MW energy storage project located at the site of the 2000 MW Liddell Power Station coal-fired thermal project in the Hunter Valley, Australia.
The AUD763 million (US$573.24 million) battery is expected to have a 20-year life and will be built in three stages starting in each of 2022, 2023, and 2024, expected to create 250 construction jobs. The 2000 MW Liddell Power Station coal-fired thermal project is due to close in early 2023.
AGL Energy has also started the construction of its 250 MW/250 MWh Torrens Island battery.
