CS Energy has signed an agreement with GE Vernova for the supply of key equipment for a hydrogen-ready gas-peaking power plant in the Western Downs region, Queensland, Australia.
The Brigalow Peaking Power Plant, situated within the scope of the Kogan Creek Clean Energy Hub near Chinchilla, is poised to leverage a blend of green hydrogen and fossil gas for turbine-powered peaking applications. Engineered with rapid-start capabilities, the Brigalow facility is strategically designed to operate during peak demand periods, providing essential firming capacity crucial for bolstering the state's transition to renewable energy. Comprising 12 aero-derivative turbines, each boasting a 33 MW capacity, the plant is slated for operational readiness in 2026.
Initially drawing renewable hydrogen from the forthcoming Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant, the Brigalow project is anticipated to incorporate a 1 MW hydrogen electrolyzer powered by an adjoining 2 MW solar farm. The combined efforts are projected to yield approximately 75 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Both the peaking power plant and the renewable hydrogen demonstration initiative are strategically positioned adjacent to CS Energy's existing coal-fired 750 MW Kogan Creek Power Station, forming an integral part of an energy hub that includes a 100 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system.
