AGL has announced that it intends to retire the power station in 2022. The company has published a plan to replace the power generated by the project, which costs AUD83/MWh, considerably cheaper than the cost of extending Liddell at AUD106/MWh. Independent analysis found an extension until 2027 would cost approximately AUD920 million. The company first announced plans to close the plant in 2015 providing seven years notice, but was asked by the Australian Prime Minister in September to look at options to keep the plant operating or to sell it in an effort to avoid power shortages
