The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has urged the Australian Energy Regulator to consider the declaration of reliability gap in the energy supply with the planned closure of the Liddell Power Station, a coal-fired thermal project in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.
The regulatory agency will determine whether Retailer Reliability Obligation could be used to proactively fill the forecasted gap in the State's energy requirement because of the upcoming closure of the 2 GW thermal project in 2022. AEMO specifically asked AER to look into the 'T-3 reliability instrument' that checks and ensures the needed energy supply in a three-year timeline.
AER has until the end of December to issue the 'T-3 reliability instrument' to cover up to 2024. In 2017, it was announced that the power station will end the operation by 2022.
