Zesco Ltd.

Company description

ZESCO Limited, also known as the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Limited, is the state-owned national power utility responsible for the generation, transmission, distribution, and supply of electricity across Zambia and parts of the Sub-Saharan region. Established in 1970 following the enactment of the Zambia Electricity Supply Act, the company consolidated several regional electricity undertakings into a single national utility and later adopted the name ZESCO Limited in 1994. Headquartered in Lusaka, the company is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

ZESCO operates across the full electricity value chain and manages an extensive network of hydropower stations, solar energy facilities, transmission lines, substations, and distribution infrastructure. The utility owns and operates more than 2,900 MW of installed generation capacity, with hydropower forming the backbone of Zambia’s electricity supply. The company also operates over 11,000 kilometres of transmission and distribution lines and is interconnected to the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), enabling regional electricity trading and cross-border power supply integration. In recent years, ZESCO has accelerated investments in renewable energy diversification, particularly solar power, to reduce reliance on hydropower following recurring drought-induced electricity shortages.

As Zambia’s largest electricity provider, ZESCO plays a critical role in supporting the country’s mining, industrial, commercial, and residential sectors. The company’s strategic vision focuses on delivering reliable and environmentally sustainable electricity services while expanding access to energy nationwide. In response to increasing electricity demand and climate-related power challenges, ZESCO has entered into multiple power purchase agreements and renewable energy partnerships aimed at strengthening national energy security and supporting economic growth.
