YPF LUZ has announced that it has inaugurated the 50 MW first stage of the Manantiales Behr wind farm, located in the city of Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut province, southern Argentina. When the park is fully operational, it will generate 99 MW.
The 30 wind turbines are located in an area of 2,000 hectares that has more than 80 years of oil and gas production history. The area has one of the highest capacity factors in the world, at around 59%.
The Manantiales Behr wind farm demanded an investment of almost US$200 million. Its development has saved a significant amount of fuel - 47,500m3 of diesel oil or 80 million m3 of natural gas would be required to generate the same energy with a thermoelectric plant. The project also contributes to the diversification of the energy matrix and mitigation of climate change, with projected annual savings of 241,600 tons of CO2.
