At the Tauhei Solar Farm in New Zealand’s Matamata-Piako District, Harmony Energy and First Renewables (part of Clarus), in partnership with construction firm Elecnor, have installed the ‘golden row’ of photovoltaic panels, marking a key milestone for what will be the country’s largest solar farm upon its commissioning in late 2026.
This initial row of panels serves as a benchmark for quality and alignment across the 202 MW project, which is a joint venture between Harmony Energy, First Renewables (part of Clarus), and construction partner Elecnor. The solar farm, located in the Matamata-Piako District, is 25% complete and remains on schedule, with the substation expected to be energized by mid-2026 and full operations targeted for 2027. The project will generate enough clean energy to power 35,000 homes, equivalent to all households in the Matamata-Piako, Hauraki, and South Waikato Districts. Beyond energy production, the initiative emphasizes local engagement, employing 40% of its workforce from the local district and planting over 100,000 native species to enhance biodiversity. Community support has been integral, with funding provided for local projects such as eco-friendly lighting at Te Aroha’s premier park, a solar installation for the Te Miro Mountain Bike Club, and donations to Te Aroha College. The project’s progress, including the early delivery of a transformer to Auckland for installation in November, reflects strong collaboration between government, industry, and the Te Aroha West community, aligning with New Zealand’s goals for energy security and climate sustainability.
