New Zealand Minister for Energy and Climate, Harmony Energy and Clarus company, First Renewables have started the construction of New Zealand’s largest Tauhei solar farm project at Te Aroha, in Waikato.
The solar farm, which is expected to be commissioned by late 2026, will cover 182 hectares and generate 280 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, enough renewable electricity to supply approximately 35,000 New Zealand homes and businesses.
Upon commissioning, the solar farm is anticipated to become New Zealand’s largest, with a capacity of 202 MWp. The project is underpinned by a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Meridian Energy, which has committed to buying 100% of the farm’s output during its first decade of operation. Elecnor has been selected as the lead construction partner. The development is financially supported by a syndicated loan from ANZ, ASB, BNZ, and MUFG Bank.
Meridian Energy Limited (Meridian) and Nova Energy Limited (Nova) have signaled their intent to form a 50-50 joint venture to build and operate the 400 MW Te Rahui solar farm at Rangitāiki near Taupō, New Zealand.
