Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of the Indian electric utility Tata Power Co Ltd, has been awarded a contract to construct a 200 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in the Solapur district of Maharashtra, India. TPREL announced recently that it had received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to proceed with the project. The contract was awarded to TPREL through a competitive bidding process followed by a reverse e-auction.

The solar farm is expected to be operational within 18 months of the power purchase agreement (PPA) execution date. The project will add to TPREL's renewable energy portfolio, which already has a capacity of 6,503 MW. Of this total, 3,909 MW is installed capacity, comprising 2,981 MW of solar and 928 MW of wind power. The remaining 2,594 MW are projects under various stages of implementation.

The project will contribute to the country's efforts to increase its share of renewable energy and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. India aims to achieve 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022 and has already surpassed the 100 GW milestone.
