SunShare Energy, ZESCO Partner on US$246 Million Solar Expansion Project in Zambia

The Zambian government signed a US$246 million agreement with SunShare Energy and ZESCO in Mumbwa District, Zambia, to expand the Nambala Solar PV Plant by an additional 200 MW under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

The deal was concluded through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between SunShare Energy and ZESCO, Zambia’s state-owned electricity utility. As part of the arrangement, the solar facility will deliver renewable power to the national grid, helping enhance electricity supply and improve energy reliability for residential, commercial, and industrial consumers throughout Zambia.

The project, situated in Zambia’s Mumbwa District, will employ modern solar photovoltaic (PV) technology to generate electricity from sunlight. Zambia offers favorable conditions for solar energy production due to its high levels of year-round solar irradiation. The expansion of solar generation capacity is expected to ease dependence on hydropower facilities, including the Kariba Dam, particularly during droughts and periods of reduced rainfall.
