The Spanish government has launched a funding program for hybrid energy storage systems with a capacity of 600 MW that generates electricity from renewable sources. Each project is eligible for funding of up to EUR15 million (US$15.68 million).
Five storage systems will be financed by the funding initiative. The projects must use renewable energy sources, but the available money will solely support the addition of storage. TEach installation will receive funding based on project expenses and developer size. As long as they don't cover the same expenditures, the Spanish government's incentive plan and EU programs can support the same project.
The government will only subsidize projects that would not be financially viable without its assistance. Before applying for funding, projects in development will not be eligible. Pre-funding projects are ineligible. Developers can get grid connection permissions during execution, thus projects do not need them for funding. To expedite project funding, up to 80% of the total funds may be requested in advance. Applications for eligible projects are due by the end of December. The program will continue through December 31, 2025.
